Their trajectory moved from the brash, frat boy persona of Licensed to Ill toward a sophisticated, sample heavy approach on the landmark Paul's Boutique, crafted alongside the Dust Brothers. They later integrated live instrumentation, blending funk, punk, and soul jazz on records like Check Your Head and Ill Communication. Known for their manic back and forth lyrical rapport and a willingness to experiment with everything from vocoders and steel bands to spiritual themes, they maintained a spirit of unbridled joy and creative freedom.
