Whitney

Group·Chicago·since 2015·indie rock/alternative/pop

Whitney is a Chicago-based indie rock band known for a signature sound described as gilded Americana and soft rock.

Formed in 2015 by Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich following the dissolution of Smith Westerns, the group blends sun-dappled guitar work with Ehrlich's sweet soul falsetto. Their music often explores the intersection of buoyant, golden-hour melodies and melancholic lyrics centered on breakups and longing. Since their 2016 debut, Light Upon the Lake, they have cultivated a dependable aesthetic of warm, honeyed arrangements featuring horns and vintage organs. This approach evokes a purity of sentiment and wholesomeness, positioning them as a modern iteration of classic rock revivalism. Their discography, including the covers project Candid and the 2025 release Small Talk, continues to refine a mood that fluctuates between easygoing pop-rock and somber, isolated reflections on the passage of time.
